Elizabeth II 1965 Churchill Commemorative Crown Coin. Reference: Spink 4144, English Silver Coinage 393N.
The 1965 crown coin was minted to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill, who died 24th January 1965. The crown was struck in cupro-nickel and depicts Churchill wearing his famous Siren suit - a one piece garment for use in air-raid shelters. Churchill had a special pin stripe version of the suit made for him. A satin finished VIP coin was also produced. Some examples of the standard issue 1965 coin exist with a plain edge. These were unintentional strikings without a collar.

The obverse design of the 1965 crown coin shows the laureate portrait of Queen Elixabeth II facing right, designed by Mary Gillick. The legend reads: · ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F · D · 1965.

Reverse

The reverse design of the crown coin is by Oscar Nemon and shows a right facing bust of Sir Winston Churchill in 'Siren suit' ranged left with the word CHURCHILL to the right

Edge

The edge of the 1965 Churchill crown coin is milled.

Variations

VIP satin finish Specimen

A specimen version of the 1965 crown coin was struck with a satin finish. These were distributed to VIPs. Spink (as standard coin), English Silver Coinage 393O.
