Elizabeth II 1965 Churchill Commemorative Crown Coin. Reference: Spink 4144, English Silver Coinage 393N.
The 1965 crown coin was minted to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill, who died 24th January 1965. The crown was struck in cupro-nickel and depicts Churchill wearing his famous Siren suit - a one piece garment for use in air-raid shelters. Churchill had a special pin stripe version of the suit made for him. A satin finished VIP coin was also produced. Some examples of the standard issue 1965 coin exist with a plain edge. These were unintentional strikings without a collar.
The obverse design of the 1965 crown coin shows the laureate portrait of Queen Elixabeth II facing right, designed by Mary Gillick. The legend reads: · ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F · D · 1965.
The reverse design of the crown coin is by Oscar Nemon and shows a right facing bust of Sir Winston Churchill in 'Siren suit' ranged left with the word CHURCHILL to the right
The edge of the 1965 Churchill crown coin is milled.
A specimen version of the 1965 crown coin was struck with a satin finish. These were distributed to VIPs. Spink (as standard coin), English Silver Coinage 393O.
