George VI Crown Coins

Only two different types of official crown coin were issued by the Royal Mint during the reign of King George VI who was on the throne from 1936 to 1952. Although the 1937 coronation crown was minted using .500 fine silver, the later 1951 Festival of Britain commemorative crown was made from cupro-nickel as a response for the country's need to repay war debt to the U.S.A. The King's portrait was designed by T. Humphrey Paget.

The title of IND:IMP (Indiae Emperator) was omitted from the legend of the coingae after 1949, once India had gained independence. As such this title didn't appear on the Festival of Britain crown of 1951.
